Liability insurance is required before you can register a vehicle in the state. Minimum policy requirements for private passenger vehicles include:

  • $20,000 for physical injury or death to one person

The Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) will suspend your vehicle registration if you do not have proof of insurance. You will need to obtain insurance and pay a $100 reinstatement fee. An additional $50 fee is required if the state police receives a secure order on your vehicle plate from the DMV.

You also face a 30-day suspension of your driver’s license for the first offense. A second offense carries a 90-day suspension. A $50 reinstatement fee is required at the end of the suspension period.
